Valuing People

Team that works to improve support services for people with learning disabilities.

Vancomycin resistant entrococcus

A form of intestinal bacteria.

vCJD

Variant of the fatal brain disease CJD that is related to the BSE disease in cattle.

VCS

See voluntary and community sector.

Voluntary and community sector

Groups set up for public or community benefit such as registered charities, and non charitable non profit organisations and associations.

VRE

See vancomycin resistant entrococcus.

VTE (Venous thrombosis)

Lower body condition in which a blood clot forms in a vein. 

Vulnerable adults

People with disabilities or mental conditions who are unable to take care of themselves, or protect themselves against harm or exploitation from others.

Vulnerable groups

People who are vulnerable because of their situation, for example, homeless people. It may also include people unable to meet their everyday needs due to a physical or mental health condition.

W

Waiting booking choice

System that provides the opportunity of faster treatment for the longest waiting patients. The system is also designed to help prepare for choice of four to five providers at the point of GP referral.

Walk in centres

Centres staffed by nurses that offer patients fast and convenient access to treatment and information without an appointment.

Wanless report

An evidence based assessment of the long term resource requirements for the NHS.

Weighted capitation formula

Formula that determines primary care trusts’ target share of available resources to enable them to commission similar levels of healthcare for populations with similar healthcare needs.

White Paper

Documents produced by the Government that set out details of future policy on a particular subject.

WHO
