A new service making our website more accessible.
dh.gov.uk is now speech enabled with Browsealoud. When plugged in it reads webpages aloud, highlighting text as it goes. That makes us more accessible for those who are dyslexic, with learning difficulties, those for whom English is not their first language, and those with mild visual impairment.
You can speech enable the website by following the link below to this section on our accessibility page. It provides a link to the Browsealoud site, where you simply click to plug in the software. It will read all the pages on dh.gov.uk, as well as some of our subdomains.
The DH website was highly commended in the 'Most accessible website' category at the COI Internet Forum Awards 2004, second to the Planning Inspectorate.
Award judges said dh.gov.uk and the winners were 'head and shoulders above the rest' of other government websites, although there was more to be done. Speech enabling dh.gov.uk is just the next step in making our website more accessible.
